History & Heritage

Founded in 1907 by German immigrant Markus Friedrich (Fred) Leupold and his brother-in-law Adam Voelpel in Portland, Oregon, the company began as a one-man shop repairing surveying equipment. After partnering with inventor John Cyprian (J.C.) Stevens in 1911 to manufacture water level recorders, the business evolved and eventually adopted the name Leupold & Stevens. Following World War II, the company transitioned into the outdoor sports market, introducing the groundbreaking, nitrogen-purged Plainsman riflescope in 1947, which set a new standard for fog-proof optics and established their legacy in the firearms industry.
